diesel mouth

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

There is a price to be paid for being a slack-jawed yokel. Every so often I’ll be stopped at a red light on my bike behind a diesel-powered vehicle, mouth agape and eyes lolling.

When the light goes green and the diesel motorist steps on the gas, I, with mouth agape, take a large breath to power my own motor, only to find that I am now within a large plume of diesel exhaust which proceeds to coat the mouth and throat with a vile layer of ungodly nastiness.

So if you see a cyclist spitting and heaving behind a diesel truck, now you know why.

friday youtubery: tilt shiftery

Here is an engaging little video employing the tilt-shift effect to create the illusion of miniaturization:

friday youtubery reduxery

I thought Friday was done, but then I stumbled upon this:

Let’s just pick the mother of all funk chords, let’s pick a ninth chord

The youtube mash-up has blossomed into art, and I think I like it.

friday youtubery

Friday, March 13th, 2009

This one’s another copout, and it’s not actually youtube, and there’s probably a bunch of other caveats* I should make but if your familiarity with current internet memes is lacking** and you haven’t heard the ruckus about Sita Sings the Blues, then I hereby pass on to you the “greatest breakup story ever told:”

Sita Sings the Blues

Click on the Watch It link for viewing options. I downloaded the 4 GB ultra-spanky high-def version and it was worth the wait.

* One more caveat, it’s like an hour and 20 minutes or so but it’s really really really worth the investment of your time.

** A polite way to say you’ve been living under a rock

socialism, nationalization, and government bailouts

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I’ve been increasingly irked by the use of the words “socialism” and “nationalization” when applied to the financial industry bailouts and Obama’s economic policies.

The world’s governments have claimed a share in companies’ ownership in return for bailout monies. I argue that ownership is not socialism, and that nationalization has a negative connotation that is not warranted.

Socialism includes both ownership and administration. I have not seen any evidence that our governments are getting more involved in the administration of the companies that benefit from bailout monies. Perhaps more oversight and regulation, but not day-to-day business operations.

The government taking an ownership stake in these companies is better described as nationalization, but even so, the degree of nationalization is not the same as what has historically scared capitalists. This is not the same as a third-world country’s regime arbitrarily taking ownership of private companies. While our governments are getting an ownership stake in bailout companies, they are not taking an ownership role; rather, the governments’ role is more akin to gentleman farming than anything else.

sadness

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I had to put down one of our cats today. Our little Burmese, Rosie, had been suffering with stomach cancer and it was time to free her from her earthly bounds.

She was a dear little soul. Her petite stature belied a fearless temperament, never backing away from our much larger cats and always eager to greet strangers. She loved a warm lap and was generous with her purr.

I feel sad.

armstrong vs. the yellow devil

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

If you watched the Amgen Tour of California this year, you may have noticed a yellow devil among the fans on the way up Mt. Palomar. I’m not a big fan of fans who run along with the cyclists and this guy got his due.

I like the smiles of the guys toward the rear, though they had to deal with a bit of a road hazard as a result of Lance’s show of displeasure.

a sore loser, and the story behind it

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

I originally saw this picture on break.com though I’d love to give proper credit for its source if anyone can find it.

I thought this picture was funny, then I realized that both guys were on the same team, Rabobank. How juicy is that? What’s great about this is that the 2nd place finisher completely ruined the winner’s moment in the spotlight since no respectable news source would publish such an inappropriate gesture.

Without knowing the riders’ names, I finally found the story behind the picture, which you can read about here: Groenendaal ruins photo for Nys.

Anyway, here’s the photo:
