Tuning up

Monday, September 25th, 2006

I made the mistake of attempting to adjust the front derailleur on my bike and managed to screw the thing up entireley. So off I went to find a bike shop to fix my mess under the auspices of a tune-up. I found myself frustrated by the lead times at most places — everyone seemed annoyed at my maintenance request and brushed me off by claiming their techs wouldn’t be able to even look at the bike for at least a week.

Then I found these guys: South Bay Bicycles. I took the bike in on a Sunday afternoon and picked it up the following evening. I can’t remember my bike performing this well, and to top it off the tune-up was $25 cheaper than The Other Guys. Kudos to the men in the big banana yellow building.

Yesterday I celebrated with a 2+ hour ride. I’ve been exploring greater distances and found my way to Paradise Hills. The emphasis there is on the Hills. One of the great things about biking in San Diego is the plethora of hills. Big hills, sissy hills, hills that climb on rocks. Now that I’m finally getting back into shape I’ve been able to attack them with authority.

Today, however, I’m paying the price. I suddenly am aware of the many stairs in the world.

Inane California Lawsuit

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

California is bringing a suit against automakers for their contributions to global warming. At first, I was on the fence when I heard about this one. Slightly incredulous, but I thought maybe there is an underlying reason that hadn’t shown up in the news stories. Like maybe the automakers have been actively scheming to undermine California’s aggressive emissions standards.

Apparently there is no such scheme. At least that’s what I gathered from comments made by California state attorney Bill Lockyer on NPR today. His reasoning for the suit is that automakers have caused “hundreds of millions” of dollars in damages to the environment by contributing as much as 30% to the carbon dioxide emissions that are warming the globe.

I am more than a little annoyed that Mr. Lockyer is wasting this state’s resources on this frivolous suit. Aside from the issue of quantifying unquantifiable monetary damages, how can we blame the automakers without pointing the finger at ourselves? Most of California’s major metropolitan areas grew during the era of the automobile, and our love of the automobile contributed greatly to urban sprawl and poor public transit systems. Is this the automaker’s fault? Should I expect to be subpoenaed for the pollution I have created during my years of driving?

Adding to my incredulity is that Honda is included in the list of 6 automakers. Seriously? Honda? Honda revolutionized the industry with regard to emissions. Back in the 1970s, Honda pioneered the emissions reduction movement by introducing cars that exceeded California’s emissions standards without a catalytic converter. And this lawsuit is their reward?

This lawsuit is a massive waste of time, energy, and money. Shit, I’ve already wasted half an hour writing this up. Lawsuits such as these are not cheap, and California is not in the financial position to waste its limited budgetary resources in the courts. And I’m sure the automakers will find a way to pass its legal costs to the consumers. A double-whammy for California taxpayers and drivers.

Hear, hear!

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

As an internet-savvy maven of teh intarw3bz, I have been known to peruse and post on bulletin boards here and there. While one should expect bulletin board posts to be rife with examples of poor grammar and spelling, there is one commonly substituted homonym that I find completely annoying: the use of “Here, here!” to emphasize agreement with another post.

Folks, it’s “Hear, hear!” Read all about it here, here, and here.

Such an hoity-toity exclamation should be used correctly, or not at all.

Of course, by posting this, I now open myself up to the critique of English editors across the land.

Flag abuse

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Maybe it’s the old Boy Scout in me coming out, but ever since 9/11 I’ve been a little perturbed by all the nationalistic flag-waving. Mind you, I appreciate people who are proud of this fine country, but when the American flag is displayed, it should be displayed with the appropriate respect. That’s all I ask.

Here’s a flag etiquette reference:
How to properly display the flag of the United States of America

Here is the latest disgusting display of our beloved Commander-in-Chief desecrating the symbol of the United States of America, courtesy of Reuters:

Some blogs put me to shame

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Don’t ask me how I came across this blog because I won’t tell you. It’s irrelevant anyway so just give up now.

This blog really puts me to shame. It dances that fine line between purpose and daily anectdote. Despite the shortcomings of my male perspective, I admire the author’s intellect, wit, and charming use of language.

So without further ado, here is a linktastic linkety linky link to blog.iblamethepatriarchy.com.

This one shall be about health

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Haven’t posted for awhile, not much going on. Or I suppose there are things going on but nothing befitting public broadcast. Once again I’m in a “why bother” funk about blogging, but this one’s lasted much longer than the rest.

So this entry shall be about health.

In May I consumed my last beer for awhile, so I guess that’s news. I don’t know whether I’m an alcoholic, I probably am, but suffice it to say that waking up feeling like crap gets old. Now I feel like crap when I wake up just because I’m getting old. And that’s all I have to say about that.

I’ve been bicycling a bit, doing the weekend warrior routine. I’ve got a route that’s about 9 miles with some decent elevation changes, with an optional add-on circuit for an additional 7 miles and a 2nd go at a punishing uphill climb. I was a little distressed at the beginning of 2006 when my weight began to breach the 170 mark and this weekend it finally went under 160 for a couple of days. Of course there is some slush for water weight and I’m back slightly over 160 again. Would like to be back at 150, I consider that my “fighting weight.” Of course I’m a pacificist so whatever that means.

See look what I told you. Bejeezus this is boring stuff.
