War on…

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

There’s a bunch of scuttlebut regarding an ongoing “War on Christians.” Behind the google search linky you’ll probably find my opinion about this new “war” better stated elsewhere.

Suffice it to say that I think the so-called war on Christianity is overblown zealotry. A time-honored tack used by fanatical religious leaders to rally the otherwise apathetic masses.

What irks me, though, is the attack on the English language and the historical context of religion in war. War gets people killed, violently. War is state-sanctioned mass murder. Using the word war to describe a perception of social and/or cultural persecution belittles its meaning. It makes the real thing seem a little less disturbing, and perhaps a more accepted fixture in our daily lives. I suppose I don’t need to mention the Crusades but I will. Christians throwing around the word war and crying persecution would do well to ponder how the wars of the past have shaped present culture.

So please. End the War On Language. Before someone gets killed.

Syd Barrett interview

This is a few years old but thought I’d post a link to it anyway. A very short interview but a very long and interesting article. If you’re interested in Syd Barrett anyway.

Louder is better?

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

Someone linked this article on one of the message boards I visit. I think it’s really interesting, a little bit technical but dumbed down enough that even I can understand it. The author argues that there is a current trend in the music industry to mix rock cds as loudly as possible, and it’s ruining the music. And it’s about Rush, no less.

Haven’t been able to post recently because of a Family Medical Event. Don’t want to go into particulars on the live intarweb so suffice it to say that everyone is ok but I had to take a few weeks off of work to tend to the little boy. If you want details (or deets if you’re short on time) send me a line through the normal channels. The net result is that there hasn’t been much time to post to my blog. Side note: what percentage of blog entries are excuses and/or apologies for not posting often enough? I think it’s time for bloggers to unite and be proud of our slack, for there is no shame in a humble blog! umm… yeah I guess there is no humility in blogging, in fact it’s pretty darn pretentious but I digress.

What to report… well I taught the little man how to ride his tricycle and now he’s a maniac. I spend about an hour with him each morning now, tooling around the neighborhood, and it is quite a workout. Half walking, half jogging and sometimes flat out running to keep up with him; he’s a little dynamo out there. I’ve got the blisters to prove it. I’ve officially become a crotchety old man, giving all the cars the evil eye when they blast through stop signs at 40 mph.

More layoffs, firings, and departures at work. Hasn’t affected my office much since January but we have a peer office in Irvine that’s in major turmoil. Sad, really. Lots of egos battling for turf. Adults aren’t much more grown up than children, though I know I act out in my own ways as well.

What else… ok well I hate the Bush Administration and what they’re doing to this country.
